Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) is a condition caused by the restriction of air in the body due to the tissue of the throat, resulting in snoring and/or irregular breathing patterns whilst sleeping. Snoring is seen as the most common symptom of obstructive sleep apnoea. If left untreated, sleep apnoea can lead to further health problems to the body, with research linking cardiac problems in particular as a consequence of sleep apnoea. People of all ages can suffer from this effect, and it’s estimated that between 5-7% of the Australian population suffer from sleep apnoea (note: also spelled as ‘apnea’).
Why Treat OSA?
There are namely three main advantages to treating obstructive sleep apnoea. First is improving your quality of sleep. By using MAD or CPAP treatment, patients show an improvement in their REM sleep and deep sleep. Also, the use of MAD is known to improve cardiovascular health. Patients who use MAD show significant improvement during the day, evident through their heart variability. It also leads to reduced blood pressure. Both MAD and CPAP treatments show beneficial impacts during the day-time hours, as well as improving sleep time at night.

There are two main forms of sleep apnoea treatment available in Australia. CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) is a process where a pump is attached to a face mask, and pumps pressurised air into the airway. How does CPAP Work for sleep apnoea? By wearing the mask continuously through the night (whilst sleeping), it ensures the body is getting sufficient amount of oxygen where else sleep apnoea would inhibit this process. Whilst it is seen as an effective method to combat OSA, there are alternatives to CPAP.
Mandibular Advancement Devices, also abbreviated as MAD or MAS (devices/splints), are designed similarly to mouthguards but worn only for sleep. By wearing a splint, it moves the position of the lower jaw so the airway is prevented from closing during sleep.
